Xbox Series X users may soon have another way to experiment with PlayStation games. Developers have managed to run several PS5 game builds on Microsoft's console using an experimental emulator called PS5X.
The project is still in its early stages, and there are some major limitations. Here's what you need to know.
PS5 Games Running on Xbox Series X
Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal has demonstrated PS5X, an Xbox port of the KytyPS5 emulator, running four games:
- GEX Trilogy
- Hellboy: Web of Wyrd
- Marvel Cosmic Invasion
- Quake II
The emulator works through Xbox Developer Mode, which allows users to test unofficial applications on their consoles. However, these demonstrations don't mean Xbox can run the entire PS5 game library.
Why Does the Emulator Have Limitations?
The biggest problem is memory. Xbox Developer Mode limits games to around 5 GB of memory, making it difficult to run demanding PS5 titles.
PS5X also needs further development to improve graphics compatibility, performance, and stability. The games demonstrated so far are not PlayStation exclusives, either.
PlayStation Games Can Also Run Through PC Ports
Another method involves running PC versions of PlayStation games on Xbox through unofficial software adaptations.
Games such as The Last of Us Part I and Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered have reportedly been demonstrated using this approach. However, this is different from emulating their PS5 versions.
Can You Download PS5X?
PS5X remains experimental, and there is no confirmed public release for regular Xbox users. Be cautious of websites claiming to offer a working installer.
For now, these developments are interesting technical experiments rather than a practical way to replace a PS5 with an Xbox Series X. Future improvements may expand compatibility, but there is no confirmed timeline.
